What is the most basic edit and what does it do?
The cut is the most basic edit which is simply going from one shot to another.
What are the purposes of a simple cut?
It can change perspective advance the story.
What is cutting on action?
Moving from one shot to another while the subject is still in motion can be as simple as a character turning.
Give three examples of action cuts.

Cutting on the subject going through a door
What is a cutaway?
Cutting to an insert shot of something and back to the subjects.
What is the purpose of a cutaway shot?
Can be used to get inside the mind of the character.
What is cross-cutting? Give an example
When the editor intercuts back and forth between locations e.g. a phone conversation.
What effects can cross-cutting be used to achieve.
It can amp up the tension and suspense of a scene and what is going on inside the character’s head.
What is a jump cut? Explain its purpose.
Is when the editor jumps between the same shot often use to show the passing of time mainly found in montages. Can also add a level of urgency to the scene.
Explain what a match cut is and give an example.
Matching one shot to a similar shot often mistaken for a jump cut. Match cuts are mainly used to seen transitions and do not always have to be visual but there is also verbal match cut
What is a transition?
Fade in fade out which is just dissolving to or from black.
A dissolve is where you blend one shot into another. Can be used in montages and show passages of time.
What is meant by fade in fade out?

What is the purpose of L cuts and J cuts?
In an L shot where the sound from one carries over to the next. Does not have to be for seen transition is use all the time when characters are talking to each other. The J cut’s sound starts before you get into that shot and is also great to reveal a new detail in a scene. They are both design to create a seamless flow with sound guiding the way
What is the purpose of continuity editing?
Continuity editing is the combining of related shots, or different components cut from a single shot, into a sequence to direct the viewer's attention to the consistency of story across both time and physical location.
